The celebrated 18th Century City Palace is the main residence of the royal family of the city of Jaipur. The Inner courtyard of the palace, the Pritam Niwas Chowk or “Courtyard of the Beloved” has four gates. There is the Lotus Gate, the Peacock Gate, the Rose Gate and the Leheriya Gate. The gates are decorated with themes symbolizing the four seasons and are each dedicated to a Hindu god and goddess.
The Lotus Gate is in the south west of the courtyard. It is a dedication to Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati, lovingly decorated with petals of “padma” or the lotus flower which represent the summer season. The magnificent lotus patterns surround the motif of the sun and deities. The ornate gate stuns with its beguiling colors and is a must-see for all those who visit the regal city of Jaipur.
