The Red Jewel

Our Red Jewel artwork celebrates the prominence of jewelry in Indian culture and is our  “jewel in the form of a book”. It is also our first piece introducing an innovative metallic texturing to soft calf leather. 

On the fourth floor of the grand Chandra Mahal complex of the 18th Century City Palace in Jaipur is the decedent “Shobha Nivas”, a lavish oblong room adorned with gold leaf, precious stones from Italy, glasswork and mirrors. The exquisite symmetrical patterns extend seamlessly from the walls to the ceiling, through to a multitude of ornate arches and columns. The elaborate red, gold and green shapes and lines inspire the opulent geometric pattern in the “Red Jewel”. 

The mesmerizing Shobha Nivas was, and still is, used by the Royal family primarily for prayers during festivals. Velvet cushions and blankets are spread out on the floor for visitors from around the world to be seated and imagine themselves partaking in a regal celebration to welcome the Hindu New Year or “Diwali”.
